A Beloved Disciple

[The pattern of envy and persecution of the chosen is also seen] in the life of Joseph and his brothers (Genesis 37:4): “His brothers, seeing how his father loved him more than all his other sons, came to hate him so much that they could not say a civil word to him.”  Eventually they threw him into the mythic pit, decided to kill him, and finally settled on selling him into slavery to save their own honor.  But God’s election will not be stopped.  We know that Joseph comes back to save these very brothers, almost like Nelson Mandela inviting his jailers to his inauguration party of the new South Africa.

In fact, I would say that Chosen people show that they are truly chosen by extending that same experience of chosenness to others.  Actually, I would take that as the test of true election.  When certain denominations cannot see “savedness” outside their own group, it is a sure sign that they themselves are not saved by any salvation worth the name.  John spends the rest of his life creating a community and a Gospel that shouts, “He is with you.  He is in you!” (John 14:17).
